Canterburys Mark Canovan won the 2010 Canterbury Open Snooker held over the week-end of 14th - 15th August with a 4 - 2 defeat of Southlands Shannon Swain in the final. Swain, fresh from representing NZ at the 2010 IBSF World Under 21 Championships in Ireland, gave Canovan a run for his money but in the end a combination of travel fatigue and Canovans class was too much to overcome. With Swains great result from the recent NZ Champs and the continuation of his good form it will surely not be too long before he breaks through for his maiden win in a ranking event.

Canovan was the only player to go through the group stages unbeaten but it was a different story in the knockout. Canovan had a comfortable 3 - 0 win over Bill Earle (Canterbury) in his last 16 match but then had to battle hard in his 1/4 final against Ian Muir (Southland) before winning 3 - 2. The semi final was another 5 framer against Jason Todd (North Otago) and it was a relieved Canovan who got there 3 - 2 to make the final. Swain also had a tough time of it in his last 16 match with Mark Piesker (Southland) before emerging victorius 3 - 2. His next match against fellow Southlander Lee Barris resulted in a 3 - 1 win and he defeated Peter deGroot (Canterbury) by the same scoreline to make the final.
